Excavation Method and Pit System

Test pits were mainly excavated manually. Arbitrary layers were used, and natural stratigraphy was observed.

A grid system, which was designed for the whole Peinan Site, is currently employed at the Excavation Site at the Peinan Cultural Park (and was also used at the Crescent-Shape Stone Pillars zone in the past.)

The grid system was set up using 5-meter grids with an east-west axis (designated as T-axis) and a north-south axis (designated as P-axis), so a test pit that was 25m of the datum point and 55m north of the datum point was numbered as T05P11. Each grid is divided into 4 2.5m x 2.5m quadrants corresponding to the four ordinal directions (NE, NW, SE, SW). These quadrants are the basic excavation units.
